MoCCA Deets, MoCCA Schedule

Mar 28th, 2013

MoCCA Fest is only 1 week away. I can tell you my schedule now.

SIGNINGS: I will be signing 2-3, both Saturday and Sunday, at the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund’s table. Apart from the signings, you will be able to buy zines and posters at the Society of Illustrators “Museum Shop”, which I presume will be near the temporary gallery they’re erecting in the Armory.

TALK: On Sunday, April 7, I will be in discussion with Ryan Sands, he of the Thickness anthology and the upcoming Youth In Decline. This will take place in the Programming Room on the Lower Level. Other programming here.

Since these things are always more fun when you have something new to peddle, I made posters and a new MutantMagic zine. The zine (with either TEAL OR PURPLE risographed cover!) is a MoCCA-only exclusive, but you can buy the poster here.

Aesop’s Leopard

aesop

A new illustration for the NYT Sunday Review. The article is a rather epic meditation on how we will exist within Nature as we move into the digital world. I don’t think I’ve ever done such a large piece in a newspaper before, spanning the width of the entire spread. Alas, because it’s so wide, it’s a little hard to display onscreen. Click here or on the image below to for an enlarged view.

Woodkid’s “The Golden Age”

Mar 21st, 2013

Last year I was approached to illustrate the special edition of Woodkid’s debut album, “The Golden Age”. Woodkid, aka Yoann Lemoine, is an illustrator and is a well-known video director and had big plans for the limited edition packaging. Very big plans. A BIBLE. An illustrated bible with an original story, cloth-bound embossed cover, etc. The songs form a continuous narrative, as do the videos.

It’s all very baroque and audacious, especially in this age. But people have responded: this special edition was sold out in pre-orders. I’m really sorry to report that, but I hear there may be more books produced (?). I’ll let you know. Of course, the regular album is on iTunes, etc.

I was very flattered to be a part of the project, because Yoann poured his heart and soul into this project and it’s always a great thing to work with someone that has such an exquisite and singular artistic vision. Below are a few select images (there are 14 total in the book).

Thousand Cranes

Mar 2nd, 2013

I’ve been waiting to post this image for a while, but the pub date got delayed. ‘Glad I finally get to share it. It’s a cover for Yasunari Kawabata’s novella “Thousand Cranes”, which explores a love triangle set against the tradition of tea ceremonies. Oddly enough, I got this job shortly after I made this image about Mishima’s “Confessions of a Mask”, another postwar Japanese novel. They’re such bleak and beautiful books. Also check out “Woman In The Dunes”.

You can see the whole series, and how the covers fit together, on designer John Gall’s website.
