Ko Murobushi

May 13th, 2009

In Toronto, my aunt took me to a modern dance recital. One of the dancers was Ko Murobushi, who performs modern Butoh. To the totally uninformed observer (ie. me), it seemed almost anti-dancing in the conventional sense… more about pure movement and emotion (sorry Butoh enthusiasts, I’m likely butchering your artform’s message, but it’s the best I can do).

Here’s a video of the performance, if you’re interested.

Housekeeping Post!

May 11th, 2009

Hi! I am back from my beloved Toronto and have some news. I’m going to dump it all on you at once. ‘Hope that’s okay.

1. We won a Doug Wright! Thank-you to Seth, Chester Brown, and Brad McKay for their tireless work with the Doug Wright Awards. Mariko and I have been involved, in some way or another, with 4 of the Awards now and it’s astonishing to see it grow with each successive year. Check out D&Q’s new (big, red, shiny) Doug Wright book if you’re interested in the man’s cartooning work.

Unwilling to saw the actual award itself in half, the DW committee thoughtfully instead gave one of us these stand-in medals, designed by Seth!

2. TCAF was a great success. Thank you to Chris Butcher and Peter Birkmoe of The Beguiling for putting on another excellent show. I think I’m on a post-show high right now, such were the good vibes. Saw old friends and met new friends, including a few heroes. ‘Left inspired and energized about comics. What more can you ask for?

3. Even illustrations were comic-themed. I was on the cover of the Times’ Book Review yesterday, accompanying the review of When I Forgot by Elina Hervonen:

4. I just received our copies of the UK edition of Skim from Walker Books. As far as I can tell, it’s available for Britons’ consumption.

5. Family time! Including looking at old pictures of a Grandma.

Away May 4-11… for TCAF!
