Here’s a really dumb TMI comic that won’t make any sense to anyone who hasn’t played Dead Or Alive: Beach Volleyball or doesn’t know my friend “Debra Shipley”.

I started this comic in 2006 after I just moved to New York from Edmonton, Canada. I was really missing my friends. Drew it out yesterday.

Pile of Sticks (with Duct Tape), 2009

Sam and I were talking recently and we concluded that there is a huge difference between “artistic talent” and “creativity”. Then we talked about how sandwiches are one of man’s greatest inventions. So make of that what you will.

When teenage boys, generally considered to be the horniest and most depraved members of society, chastise you for your sexual indiscretions… well.

"When I Forgot" Book Review Illustration

May 14th, 2009

Here’s background on the Book Review illustration from last weekend.

What was cool about this project was the Art Director, Nicholas Blechman, was the one to actually suggest a comic format. It fit the bill perfectly, as I felt that the story couldn’t easily summed up in a singular image. Nicholas is one of those Art Directors that I feel I learn something from every time I do a job with them.

I actually can’t stand this next one… I always tell students to not send sketches they loathe…

The colour strategy for the final was icy cool blues with hits of “heat” and intensity.

One last TCAF post

Here is an amusing video that was produced for the Doug Wright ceremony last weekend. I was completely tickled to see Skim “animated”! Also, forgot to mention: congrats to both Matt Forsythe and Kate Beaton, who also won awards. Matt has always been very supportive of my work and I was thrilled to meet Kate, whose webcomics I follow.

Of the books I picked up, I am most impressed by Alan’s War, by Emmanuel Guibert. I had seen the book before and was blown away by the drawings, but the storytelling is no less fantastic. I actually spent some time talking to Emmanuel that weekend, and am kind of pissed that I hadn’t read it prior. There is so much I would like to ask him about.

Also pictured is Shary Boyle’s big book Otherworld Uprising (colour! pretty!). Meeting Shary was another highlight.
