Exploding Horse

Apr 20th, 2009

I tried to draw an exploding horse. Not actually exploding with blood but, like, visually exploding. I failed.

Or did I?

Hemispheres Magazine

Apr 17th, 2009

Here is the process for a recent job for Hemispheres Magazine, the in-flight magazine of United Airlines. The concept was “Green Chicago”.

There was a ridiculous amount of research done to get the fishbowl perspective in The Bean. I consider this illustration a bit of a departure from my regular style, but I still like it. It reminds me of 80s illustration. It’s all about the supertight highlights. TING! (Click to enlarge.)

And look! An illustration in its natural environment! How novel. Thanks to Josh for the snap.

… speaking of Tatsumi!

I have the great privilege of exhibiting some comics work alongside his. Amazing.

The show will run concurrent to the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. Thank-you Chris Butcher, for ALL your work organizing TCAF and TCAF-related events.

A Drifting Life

Apr 15th, 2009

Times article on Tatsumi’s new Drifting Life. Can’t wait for the day when an article in the Times just assumes the reader is at least somewhat familiar with the concept of a “graphic novel” and doesn’t have to spend half the article explaining and justifying the form.

Tatsumi is in conversation with Adrian Tomine at the PEN Festival in a few weeks.

Skim News

Apr 14th, 2009

Mini-interview about Skim (Skimterview?), previously mentioned here, now online.

The interview mentions the Governor General Award “controversy”. Well, I have a very happy addendum: Mariko and I have both received a travel grant from the Canada Council for the Arts (who also run the GGs) to launch our book in Spain! I’m really thrilled. We applied separately and both received the full amount.

We will be in Barcelona from May 26th to June 1st. We will be talking/signing at the Biblioteca Can Fabra, Continuara Comics, FNAC, and the Barcelona Comics Festival. I will post more specific information as the event gets closer.

Thank you, Canada Council! JT + CC!

Layer Tennis Results

Apr 11th, 2009

Here are the Layer Tennis results. They are chronological, top to bottom (click to enlarge). We were given 15 minutes for each rebuttal or “volley” after our partner’s turn.

About the experience: I have not been that stressed out in a LONG time. Think clammy, shaking hands and riding a thin edge of panic for about 4 hours straight. I met up with Jennifer afterwards for dinner and we were literally HAGGARD. Ridden hard and put away wet, as they say. 15 minutes is no time to do anything beyond roughly banging together a concept. So to all of y’all who were criticizing my choice of colour palettes… PFFT!
