Reflecting… On Composition

Feb 23rd, 2009

Updating lapse! Busy busy creating illustrations for you and me.

Paul Gravett recently interviewed me for a speech and article he was writing about Japanese woodblock printing (ukiyo-e) and its influence on modern manga. Here’s the article, which appeared in the Royal Academy Magazine. Paul is such a fantastic educator and it’s great to hear his thoughts on an comics topic.

My blurb is about composition.

It’s a topic I’ve been bringing up a lot lately with students. Actually, it’s something I think about a lot, in general. Composition is just the design of the picture. It’s something I believe one should consider carefully, because if the design is bad you’re pretty much screwed from the get-go. Usually the culprit if one’s reaction to the image is “meh”.

Maybe I’ll write a manifesto on it one day, but not today (see first sentence).
