The Guardian UK, who is fast becoming one of my favourite clients, asked me to do a 2-page comic for New Years. The theme is “Back to the Future” (but not in the Michael J. Foxian sense, of course). The theme is me, me, ME!

I regret not making the very last oldie version of me completely naked. The idea is that we don’t wear bikinis when we actually have the bodies for it because we’re too self-conscious, but then by the time we’re old, we don’t care what anyone thinks. However, maybe I’m wrong on this theory… I was in Florida twice this year and it seemed like everyone felt entitled to wear the skimpiest of beachwear. And hey, maybe they are!

Just a bit.

That Beasts 2 book that I contributed to is now available. I drew this thing for it.

I’ll have a few things in the Society of Illustrators Sequential show. Jan 7-Jan 24. There is an opening on the 16th.

I was pretty sad to hear about Pages bookstore in Toronto potentially going under. Pages helped us launch Skim earlier this year and has a mandate to support and promote local authors.

I remember spending hours in Calgary’s small independent bookstores when I was a teenager… now it seems like the city is nearly devoid of those kinds of shops. Maybe it’s not a huge deal in the long run (one CAN get books cheaper on Amazon, and I sometimes do). But while browsing in St. Mark’s Books yesterday, I was reminded what a small pleasure perusing real, physical books are.

So if you’re in Toronto and you love books AND you have some last-minute shopping to do, perhaps stop by your local bookstore?

I’m very interested in crafts, but I unfortunately don’t the time to take proper classes (EXCUSES!). I would love to learn to quilt, for example.

An interesting article and slideshow in a current exhibit on Embroidery. I’ll try to catch it when I put all this pre-holiday work to bed.
